This was my third year doing the Wine Country Century, and it is always a great event. The folks at the Santa Rosa Cycling Club do an outstanding job staffing and putting on the event. There never seems to be a shortage of people at check-in, the rest stops, or on the course. The course was much better marked this year than in the past. The rest stops have a HUGE selection of snacks, food and drink. The lunch stop is basically a deli with made to order sandwiches. If you go hungry on this ride, it’s your own fault.

The roads are generally pretty good. Most are quite country roads, but cars do zip by you pretty quickly. The route is marked clearly, and at major turns, there are volunteers flagging the route. The route is the same year to year, so most locals are tolerant of cyclists, but you do get the occasional motorist who doesn’t care for the cyclists on the road.

This year, there wasn’t any swag, which was totally fine with me. Bike parking after the ride could be better monitored and secured. It seemed pretty easy to snag a bike from a rack on the perimeter of the bike corral. Either secure your bike in the corral, at your vehicle, or park in the middle of the corral.

Overall, this is a highly recommended ride, and I make it a point to do it every year.

WE loved this ride! we didn’t park but rode from a b and b we stayed at with a group. The roads were a bit rough with some areas that were quite sketchy.. vertical dips in the road that I worried someone would eat it.. but all in all a great ride. great route for variety of riders. the post party environment was amazing.. that paella!! beers from lauginitas etc.. all good!.. fabulous marking along the route, we did use our route sheet but could have managed without.. nice help crossing with support over major highways/difficult crossing.. Thanks!!

This was my second time on this ride. I enjoyed it more than the first. The food provided during the ride is outstanding and I really felt taken care of. The course is pretty and they have plenty of support to keep you on course and safe. The cost is a little high as it the area, but that’s somewhat expected. I liked the added touch of a free beer at the end of the ride, but wish there were more beer options. I will definitely return for next year.

I rode the 100k Wine Country Century and had a blast. The scenery couldn’t be beat, and everything about the ride — staff, support, food — was excellent. The ride is fairly easy for a ride that length as there are no big hills — just rolling terrain through vineyard after vineyard.

I have been on several rides where there were more rest stops with a wider variety of drinks. I have always had to purchase a t-shirt, vest or jersey, ,but have been given a gift bag with goodies. (lip balm, cliff bars, wrist bracelet, tire patch kit, tire levers just to name a few items)
I have to say the beer and food at the end of the ride was excellent. The best I have had.
The road conditions were a bit rough.
Overall we all enjoyed our ride. So thank you

First the pros. The scenery is gorgeous with lots of rolling hills through the heat vineyards and rugged coastline. There were also a lot of backroads with minimal traffic. Some of the road surface is rough which takes away from the enjoyment of the scenery for safety reasons. The staff were friendly and the rest stops were more than adequate. This year the post ride meal was done by Gerald’s paella which was good. Now the cons. I did the 118 mile super century so as you might imagine we finished later than the rest only to find out the free beer or any beer stops at 430. There were a lot of folks who did 118 miles and didn’t get a beer when they deserved it the most. Also some road markings were innacurate vs the route map. If I may also suggest to use bike numbers instead of jersey pin numbers in the future. A great ride otherwise ruined by no beer.

This was my first time and I really had a great time. Loved the metric century route. I hope I can do this again. The riders and the staff were very friendly. The FOOD was FANTASTIC at the rest stops and at the end. Wow… Parking was so easy.

    Enjoyed it all.

This was my 2nd year riding the Wine Country Century ride and I again had a great time! The scenery is very beautiful but I wish the roads were in better condition! I enjoyed the food at the rest stops and the clothing drop options.

This was my first time riding the Wine Country Century and I really enjoyed it! I was worried that it would be burned out by the fires last year, but the scenery was beautiful and the ride very well supported. Ride registration included food and beer, and there were plentiful rest stops and lunch along the way.

    A+++ would ride again!

This is a very scenic race held during a gorgeous time of year in Wine Country. We enjoyed wine tasting at local venues around the area the day before the ride. The stops are convenient and the food was excellent. One exception: instead of Gatorade or other electrolyte drink, they served very cloying Gu drinks that were undrinkable. The rest of the stuff was great. Lots of different race lengths to suit varying abilities. The staff were friendly and the SAG wagons were plentiful.

This was the second ever organized (metric century) ride I’ve been on. The other was organized by Cyclists for Cultural Exchange at Aptos (near Santa Cruz) which I did a couple of years ago. Both rides so far have been excellent.
Not to take anything away from this ride, but just for comparison purposes, the rest stops at the CCE ride beats this one. Fresh-squeezed apple cider, a live mariachi band, fresh and hot minestrone soup. Those are some of the things that come to mind even after two years.
On the other hand the gala at the finish of this ride was a lot better. Ooh for that paella! I would do another few miles for that.
The SAG support in this ride also seemed a lot more organized in comparison. In addition to the usual vehicles, I saw several “Ride marshals” on the course which was good. I don’t recall seeing that at the CCE ride, and even the SAG vehicles were sparse.
For the most part the course was well marked. There were a couple of places where the markings had been eroded, perhaps by other vehicles, but nothing too bad.
I came in on Friday evening, and registration was a breeze. The volunteer staff, all throughout, was extremely friendly.
Looking forward to doing this again.

This was the first time I rode WCC. I was simply taken away by the beauty of the scenery. I feel very fortunate to live only two hours away from such an idyllic paradise. In addition, there was an army of volunteers who couldn’t wait to help! And, last and best. The food and the drinks! Paella, watermelon, coffee, assortment of cookies, ice cream, beer! I mean how could things be any better? I am hoping to bring my kids along to the next year’s WCC!

2018 was my first time riding the Wine Country Century, with only one prior Century ride (2011 AMBBR) as a reference. All in all it was a great experience. The scenery of wine country in early Spring after a wet winter was breathtaking, but I couldn’t help but notice the very poor condition of many of the back roads. One especially dangerous part of the ride was a fast and steep descent with potholes and uneven patches over the entire width. Aside from that, however, the ride profile was very manageable, with just over 5,000 feet of subtle elevation gain, the majority of which is early in the ride. There was one short but steep climb up Chalk Hill around mile 94 of 100 that had many a rider walking their bikes to the top. The 4 rest stops (25, 50, 75, 90) were appropriately located and stocked. The end of the ride had a paella company, a sausage company, and Lagunitas beer, but it was otherwise pretty mellow with no pomp and circumstance.

I have been riding the WCC for over 20 years and have ridden it at least a dozen times. I’ve done the double metrics, century & now the 100k. I’ve ridden in heavy rain, hot weather, head winds and pleasant weather like this past weekend. All part of the experience. I’ve done it on half-bikes & more recently a tandem with my brother. This is my favorite ride, bar none. When it says “wine country”, it means 70-80% of the ride is through vineyard country. Very beautiful surroundings, roads, wineries, etc. It crosses the Russian river several times and if you do the 200K, the ride out to the coast at Ocean Song is spectacular, challenging climb & descent. There is a reason the registration fills up early. It is a must do ride that I recommend to all my friends. Even with the post-fire challenges, I don’t think anything was below par. If anything, they put on the event to a level that exceeded prior years. I didn’t notice anything lacking. The rest stop food is great and the after ride-feed had some great choices. Best of all, a free beer! Before the year is out, we all talk about what rides we will do “next year”. This is at the op of the list!

This was our fifth 100k with the SRCC and it’s as goOd as ever, especially now after suffering such a loss from the October fires, how they came back from that to host is amazing to me. We rode our tandem and loved the cool weather of the morning, all the way into the afternoon, good job SRCC on the weather! Great lunch stop sandwiches. Themed rest stops every 15-20 miles with smiling people and a GREAT end-of-ride lunch of paella or sausage or custom burrito, which I got. PLus beer or kombucha and all you can eat popsicles — we probably gained weight on the ride. Super well organized and fun. $90 per person for a tandem is a lot of money, maybe they can offer a tandem discount? THANKS SRCC!!!

Best ride ever. Me and my friends automatically decided that we will do this ride regularly from now on. Food was great! They had sandwiches for lunch, TriTip after race meal. Refreshments were aplent during and after the race. Very nice tour organizers. I bought a transfer registration from Craigslist and it was so easy to had it transferred the morning of the race. They had a easily recognized table dedicated for transfers.
    The ride was awesome!

Still smiling at end of the ride tells me I picked the right first Century event to try. Can’t say how pleased I was with the event for scenery on the route, sense of comfort and safety , appropriately spaced rest stops and overall friendliness of staff and participating riders. If you are aiming for a first time Century event, you can’t go wrong with this one. It’s a top on my list for next year.

I loved the scenery and low traffic back roads even though many were very rough. The course was well marked and volunteers at the major turns and dangerous intersections. I loved the lunch stop, first time I have ever had a made to order sandwich option. very cool

i did the 200K ride and survived it and enjoyed it! some of the sonoma roads are terrible and pot-hole ridden but that’s the area – the local city council needs to address that. the scenery is great and it was very well organised. will certainly do again.

This was my first century ride and I loved it!! The course was pretty well marked, though I sometimes would have gotten lost if I weren’t following others. The volunteers serving food were AMAZING. Love the variety of food for snacks and lunch. Would have wished better food and more variety of beer (and wine!) at the end. I also wished there was a clear start and finish. Then end was anti-climatic because there was no define ending line. Otherwise, love it. Would definitely recommend.

I rode this ride two years ago and did the WildFlower last year. This ride certainly is my flavor compared with WildFlower. I like the 100k ride because it’s just long enough and I get to enjoy and see the awesome scenery throughout the ride. The climbing distances are moderate to slightly challenging. There were some small portions roads needs repair but that is not an issue since the traffic is minor. The rest stops are great with plenty of bike parking and very good variety snacks. Staff is so friendly and helpful. Lunch has a variety of sandwiches and snacks. You will have plenty to eat and re-hydra with Gatorade or water. The Chalk Hill road is re-paved and the climbing is not too bad. After a long ride, you can enjoy very good tri-tip meal if you like steak and plenty of drinks to re-hydra or a beer to celebrate your accomplishment. I highly recommend this ride.

Gorgeous vistas, the rest stops had decent munchies and wait time at porta-potties was minimal. The traffic “controlled” intersections and turns aided by law enforcement were greatly appreciated. The website description of Chalk Hill climb being 3/4’s the way through wasn’t quite accurate. Seemed like it was pretty much at the end, within the last 10 miles….ala in all, a very well organized ride. Worth driving the 4.5-5 hours for this event! Plan on returning with other riders from my hometown.next year.

Every rest stop had amazing snacks, treats, and meals. I think I put on a few pounds over the course of the ride. The staff was exceptionally friendly. I would definitely do this ride again!

As I said in an earlier review, this was our fourth year doing this event. Since I am a club member in the Santa Cruz Cycling Club it was great to compare another club ride with some of our events. I found your event to be top notch. The food at the rest stop was great along with access to the porta potties. The route marking on the roadway was very helpful. I prefer this to reading the map, although the map was great to get an overview of the route in advance. I enjoyed the food at the end, plentiful and we always look forward to the beer truck for a well earned beverage. All the volunteers were friendly as were the riders. I appreciated the cleanliness of the food prep (sanitation protocol). Will definitely come back rain or shine! We encourage our club members to come to this event each year.

This is the second time I have experienced this ride. Two years ago I rode the Century and this year I rode the 100k. Both have great scenery and the climb to distance for either are moderate to slightly challenging. Some small portions have roads needing repair but that is not an issue since the traffic is minor which allows you to take in the scenery throughout the ride. The rest stops are good with plenty of bike parking, porta potty’s, and good snacks. Lunch has a good variety of food, and the after ride venue has a very good meal and beer venue. Highly recommend! The only down side I have found is that there is no food support at the beginning of the ride but this is clearly noted in the info provided before the ride.

This was my first time on the Wine Country Century. This was a wonderful ride that I will do again and again. Scenery was amazing. The volunteers were wonderful. Good selection of healthy snacks and food at the rest stops and after. I rode the 100k this year. Maybe next year I can do 100 miles? Looking forward to doing this next year. 🙂

This is a well planned and run event. Some of the friendliest volunteers ever. Especially great police support for certain intersections. The scenery is absolutely wonderful…though many of the country roads are teeth-jarring. Pretty easy ride, in spite of stiff headwind for the first 30 miles…and then, of course, there’s Chalk Hill. Will plan to ride it again!!

My first event ride and I was very impressed by how smooth everything ran. I was a little intimidated to join 2400 riders but the ride was so well organized and well staffed that it went without a hitch. I did the 100K course, which was just stunning scenery riding through 3 different wine appellations, rolling hills and pretty good roads. The food and beverages at the rest stops was beyond my expectations; sandwiches to order or if you didn’t want to wait, delicious ones already made. Even at the finish line where I thought there’d be a mob scene, it was extremely well organized with plenty of places to sit, lots of food options and people moving through quickly. I was thoroughly impressed and will definitely do this ride next year. Hopefully I’ll be ready for the full century by then!

I rode my first century type ride in last year’s (2016) Up & Down ride in Ashland Oregon. That ride was sufficient to hook me on long group rides and now I have some markers upon which to make comparisons. I’ll say up front that I loved both The Wine Country Century (WCC) and Up & Down (U&D), but they were different.

    • WCC has a much bigger ridership (2,500 vs. 80). U&D is new so I think that the numbers will increase. I like comradeship during the ride, but I do like a bit of breathing room as well. Having said that I found U&D sparse on the long straightaways while there were a couple of times that WCC got a bit congested.

    • Scenery: Both were beautiful, though the scenery of the two was very different.

    • Difficulty: The WCC metric century was perfect for those of us who are getting into shape after a winter lull. Climbing over 5,000 feet in U&D, most of it on a single climb, was brutal, especially in the summer heat. I’m glad that I was in pretty good shape to be able to ride it by mid-July, when it takes place.

    • Organization and Support: All of the volunteers in both rides did an excellent job of supporting the riders. And, I want to commend the Highway Patrol at the WCC for waving us through the stop signs in a number of the intersections.

Conclusion: I want to ride both rides again and again. I’ll be back next year.

I’m pretty new to riding centuries. My friends from back East who come out to ride the Wine Country Century every year told me about it and so I joined them. What a great experience! We did the metric century and it was a perfect early season get in shape ride. Every incline except for a short, steep one near the end, was gradual, and the course was set up to take advantage of the prevailing afternoon breezes. The organization of the ride and the volunteers were superb. There is no question that I’ll be back for next year’s Wine Country Century.

I’ve ridden this sportif more than 5x’s. It’s one of the better centuries, with some rolling hills but mostly flat roads, it has spectacular vistas of wineries and vineyards. In the past there were one or two sketchy T-crossings, but the organizers have added CHP traffic cops there to ensure we can pass through safely. Thanks organizers!! Roads have been repaved, which makes the ride even better. Food and drink offered is good, but I’d like to see them bring back the gel shots that they had in the past. This century is good for all levels of riders. It’s also good for training. Maybe add a few climbs at the middle or beginning. Support staff has been always on the ball with bike repair and SAG.

This was my first century and what a way to begin. Below are the reasons why I enjoyed this ride so much:
    1. Phenomenal volunteers – they were so positive and generous and happy. I felt like they were so happy to be there doing their jobs and helping all the cyclists.
    2. Gorgeous scenery – from soft rolling hills through vineyards to beautiful, cool climbs and descents through redwood forests. There is a great mixture of terrain.
    3. Mixture of riders – from young to old and everything in between. What a blend of the cycling community. No ego or competitiveness – ride at your own pace and jump from group to group is what I did – a great way to experience the culture.
    4. Fabulous rest stops – starting with the numerous clean portable toilets to the Gatorade stations and large assortment of snacks at each rest stop, they had something for everyone. Even the potato quesadilla at the first stop which was a great surprise. The volunteers were having fun at the last stop by putting m&m’s and peanut butter on top of bananas – it was their special creation! What great morale by all.

All in all, it was a very memorable ride which I will definitely do again. It has actually made me want to look into other century rides in my area because how inspired it made me. Thanks Santa Rosa Cycling Club!!!

This is my second year doing the WCC and my first century! I wouldn’t miss this ride! The location cannot be beat. You find yourself rolling through some of the most picturesque towns and iconic roads with beautiful vineyards all around. The volunteers are among the most cheerful folks I have ever had the pleasure to be around and the joy is not lost on the riders, who cannot help but be buoyed by the pleasantness! So much great food, tons of clean potties, lots of stops. I have zero feedback for improvement. Just keep doing what your doing!! Such a fun and beautifully hosted event. See you in 2018!

This was an excellent ride. We got to see so many scenic areas in Northern California’s wine country. I loved riding along the Russian River and through Sonoma’s vineyards. The next great thing is, the WCC was so laid back! No super strict mandates, no tenseness about where to stop, no crazy, unorganized start waves, just a casual ride.

The rest stops were fantastic!!!! There was plenty of food!!! I was surprised at how many porta potties they had at the rest stops, there was never a long line, so it was a non-issue.

This was the longest ride I’ve ever done. I loved it all. There were no road closures, so, no weird deadlines. We received a cue sheet, which I didn’t even need to reference because the roads were so clearly marked with spray painted “WCC’s” and arrows. The volunteers were great, and I really appreciated their efforts. See ya next year!

This is my first ride for the Sonoma Wine Century and I really enjoyed every minute of it! The route was perfect for beginners and enthusiasts like me. I chose the metric century route and the sceneries and views were fantastic. There was one specific route that I really liked and it took us through canopies of trees and shade with the vineyards as your backdrop; it was just perfect! Rest stops were well equipped with Food and facilities. I really liked their lunch offering and the trip-tip was the perfect meal to end the ride. At this point, I feel there is nothing to improve upon their ride. The organizers really did their jobs! I would definitely make this ride a yearly event for me and my friends.

It was my first time doing the ride and overall I had a great experience. I did the 100K ride, my favorite part of the ride was the portion on 128 highway the road was in good shape and I was able to go at a good pace. The things I thought that worked well was the rest stops were well placed and they had large selections of fruits and drinks. The ride had a lot of turns so the signs/staffs that were posted were very helpful. But I felt that there were less signs on the later half of the ride so one improvement would have been to have signs and staff throughout the ride. The food at the end of the ride was great and there was a lot of space to find a seat.

This was my first Wine Country Century ride and I was very impressed!
Even my friends who have ridden rides were pleasantly surprised on how well the event was conducted.
I will definitely come back next year!
    Keep up the good work!

Great overall experience on relatively well-paved road. Route markings were clear and I appreciated the flag people and police who helped us make the turns on busier roads. Only suggestion for future rides is for a more complete first-aid kit with the med team. My friend had a bad fall and although they had gauze, they didn’t have any tape. Otherwise, great experience – I would do this race again and recommend it to others.

Great ride that is very well supported. We saw many SAG vehicles on the road although fortunately did not need them. The rest stops were well stocked with food and beverage. It’s a beautiful route through some of my favorite roads in wine country. Only odd thing is that at the after party, there was only beer, no wine.

One of the best organized bike events I’ve ever participated in! Despite some confusing country road intersections, the well-marked route stencils on the roads were well placed and obvious, plus they had volunteers with flags at the intersections to direct cyclists!
The WCC served LUNCH at the half way point! And the tri tip meal at the end of the ride was fabulous!

Everyone I talked to had a great time and I would definitely do this ride again!!!!!
    Thank you SRCC!!!!

This was my first cycling event and it was wonderful! Very well organized and lots of food was provided. It was safe and scenic. I am looking forward to doing this event next year. There was ample rest stops as well. The only issue I noticed was one rest stop was in a small location and it was cramped.

This was my first time riding this event and can’t be more positive about the organization and friendliness of all the volunteers. There even was a rest stop with a Hawaiian theme. The scenery is awesome, the roads selected (even though some are in the need or repair) are perfect with little traffic. SAG cars or motorcycles come by frequently so no worries about having to wait long if you need them. Food at each rest stop was great with a great variety of options. Finishline BBQ was perfect to finish of the day. Will ride again next year. Ps. I did the 200K.

I have ridden this event for the past 10 years and consider it the best of the NorCal centuries, from the breathtaking scenery, super support staff, and delicious post-ride meal. Just unbeatable, and add a Lagunitas brew and life doesn’t get much better! Of course, if you have a problem riding through one beautiful winery after another, then don’t come.

2017 was my first time on this ride. We had a tandem team and loved the ride. The route was very scenic and the weather was perfect. The rest stops had everything you could possibly imagine (nutella on strawberries!). I’ve done many rides on the east coast, and I’d have to say the wine country century has been the most organized ride I’ve ever been on. The staff was very friendly, and everything was in order. Very impressed! Will definitely do it again next year.
