This was my first half century and I enjoyed every minute! My husband and I rode our tandem bike and thought it was a lot of fun. Might do it again next year!

I have been riding and racing bikes for 7 years and this was one of the coolest events I have ever done. The staff and volunteers are awesome. I had a flat and got a free extra tube from one of the support cars that pulled over and stopped to help. The rest stops had plenty of food and water (m&ms too). The course was beautiful and goes right along the California Central Coast. I did the 100 mile and started at 9am (the latest you can start) so the roads started to get pretty busy as the day wore on and the wind picked up substantially. However, some of the ride had a closed lane to traffic so riders were protected. High visibility signs were everywhere along the course and to warn cars of cyclists. I highly recommend this ride for adults and teenagers and because of the traffic I wouldn’t recommend the ride for kids. Also, I recommend bringing lights to increase visibility. All in all this is a fantastic ride with great staffing and very well run. Very worth the trip out.

This was my second time doing the ride, signing up for the half-century (50 miles). Although the morning started out cold and wet (for the longer rides, it began in the rain), things started to clear up fairly early and by about 11, the sun was out and the jacket was off. For anyone not used to climbing, this course offered challenges, but not so bad as to be extraordinarily taxing; a very good mix of terrain and the vistas offered were as beautiful as I remembered. SAG vans were quite visible and the rest stops well-stocked and organized. I especially appreciated the traffic assistance where called for and the fact that at one point, one lane of the freeway was blocked off since the shoulder was to chancy to ride on.

As they were last year, the organizers/volunteers were cheerful, supportive, and extremely helpful. Their energy was infectious and welcome. I’m glad a came back for this year and definitely intend to in 2020.

The 100-mile course was very well marked, the road was great and the views were phenomenal. Who ordered the headwind??? Whoever it was… thank you! It felt great on the way back to Morro Bay.
Please, have some type of start/finish banner/arch for riders to memorialize the event with a picture (or you have a photographer positioned there).
I recommend you provide route slips that are adhesive and can be placed on the top tube of the bike. If you are interested I can show you my unused route slip from another ride which I saved.
Overall… awesome event, we hope you get more riders in the future and the event lives on forever.

The Lighthouse Century was easily one of my favorite rides to date. A little rain and a lot of wind and we still have an amazing time. SAG support was excellent, the volunteers at the rest stops were more than helpful and the service provided by on site mechanics was amazing. We will be back!

The lighthouse was my first long distance cycling event and was an excellent experience. I enjoyed the beautiful scenery of the ride, the iconic landscape of the PCH with the landmarks of the Piedras Blancas light house and morro rock on either end of this out and back route really helping to frame and anchor an awesome ride with these iconic landmarks. The ride was a good mixture of challenging and approachable. Testing my nerves at points, but on the whole allowing me to feel confident I could complete the route and accomplish my goals! The staff was friendly, encouraging and helpful throughout the event. The post ride BBQ was a nice reward for the ride. I am happy that PhotoCrazy provided ride tracking so I could see an accurate representation of my time, and evaluate my performances against prior personal bests in training as well as against future rides. The only criticism I would offer was signage was not totally comprehensive, and at the end I was a bit confused on where the route was a bit hard to follow at a few junctions at the end in Cayucos. Otherwise a perfect ride, and I definitely plan on running this again next year (and hopefully to do the full century next time!) thanks SLOBC and PhotoCrazy!

Much of this course is a local training route for me, so why would a local pay money to ride local roads? The support and enjoyment of riding with others. The SLOBC does a fantastic job of organizing this as well as the Wildflower Century. The rest stops are well-placed along the route, they were stocked with the right sort of carbs and fluids needed for a long ride, and while thankfully I did not require their services, the SAG support was very visible along the entire course. It was also nice to see sunscreen at one of the stops since I forgot mine! I agree with others that the schwag is a little lacking, but the scenery and support make up for it. And, I really appreciate that PhotoCrazy gets a handful of great images — I never get any cycling images of myself but for these rides.

Pretty standard fondo, the route was really good aside from a couple sketchy spots on PCH near the lighthouse. There were a lot of slow moving riders on course but for the most part the awareness was high and faster moving pace lines were able to pass with minimal danger aside from the fore mentioned tight spot on PCH where a rumble strip had to be crossed to pass. I didn’t get any flats but I did see an abundant amount of riders dealing with flats one rider in my group flatted 4 times twice on the front and twice on the rear.

This was my first time on this ride. Registration took much longer than seemed necessary and the wait was great. Bagels were not available when I arrived at the first rest stop in Harmony around 10AM. All the staff seemed friendly and well-meaning, but I think a bit more attention to detail is needed. While I had no interaction with SAG, early on in the ride it appeared a biker was down and was attended by CHP, a SAG and a by ambulance. The SAG vehicles were numerous and seen often cruising the route.

This is the 2nd time I did this ride. I still have the same feeling about the ride, it’s incredible and a must-do. Although, I still maintain that they need a start and finish line and also take that patch and put it on a medal at the finish to give out. The Lighthouse course is such a huge accomplishment for some. Having no finish line and no “award” at the end seems like you could do the course without paying for the ride day. What made this ride great last year was the food at the rest stops. This year, this was a huge disappointment and at mile 60 rest stop I was sooooo depleted and hangry, there was only fruit left. They did have some corn tortillas they warmed up and put cream cheese on (out of bagels and cheddar cheese). It was gross but of course I ate 5 because I needed some more fuel to finish. Winery rest stop at top was the same. After all the hills, you need more fuel to keep going. At the winery they offered water, no hydration drinks or tabs. The salsa and chips was great but it’s not a sustainable food source that you can eat quickly or a lot of. Rest stops need to think Protein, carbs, and fat from natural food sources, not junk food. It would be better if SLO gave a list of what food and drink needs to be provided at all the stops. I’ve had better food from my own local bike shop on 50 mile rides. Worst decision I did this year was NOT fill my pockets with hydration tabs and food because of last year. Bad call because I really needed it this year. The photo’s are awesome and I really liked the two different locations this year! You can’t beat the scenery and it’s the best ride in CA regardless of the rest stops, just make sure you bring what you need on the ride.

Lighthouse is an almost yearly ride for us – 3 couples. The ride support is top notch; we had to pull over a couple of times to help ourselves (chain drops) and another lady and both times a SAG vehicle pulled over to see if we were ok. The rest stops were well stocked with more than adequate snacks/water and friendly servers. The only thing missing was a tail wind; it mostly blew off-shore (L to R) rather than north to south – didn’t see a checkbox for controlling the wind…

I found the frequency of rest stations just right, but I would recommend that SLOBC bring even more bike racks as there wasn’t enough parking due to the way that riders arrive in large groups. I’d also ask that they bring more shade structures or umbrellas for folks who need to cool off, especially in the Paso Robles area stop where it was pretty warm.

There should be, but wasn’t, a mechanic or full tool set at every rest station. While riders ideally will carry their own, many will inevitably need something that they’ve forgotten to bring.

Route was scenic and beautiful. Traffic can move pretty quickly, often in excess of 60 MPH, but it helps that there is a wide shoulder for most of the ride.

Lastly, the staff were very friendly, but at the Moonstone Beach Park stop in Cambria, we arrived at 2:45 PM and they were already packing up despite it being advertised that this stop would be open until 3:30 PM. We were okay but there were dozens of cyclists behind us who may not have been so lucky. Not everyone can complete a century in 5-6 hours, so please know that your participants are of every skill level.

Lastly, there was no finish line and no banner saying “YOU DID IT” or “GOOD JOB” at the end of the 100 miles. Just a sad, quiet parking lot. Many of these events have live music and great food at the end and it becomes an event for the whole family to come and celebrate and spend money…why not do this at the end of the Lighthouse Century?

Overall, I would definitely recommend this ride to someone, but SLOBC could and should make a few tweaks to improve it.

This is my second time riding the Lighthouse. I did the 75 mile route and it was a beautiful ride…a bit overcast, but I don’t think the SLOBC could do much about that. The ride is very well supported, rest stops are stocked with a wonderful variety of food, the volunteers were very friendly. This is my favorite ride of the ones I’ve taken part in. I will definitely be doing this one again and would encourage anyone who rides to try it as well.

This was my first major ride besides the LA River Ride and the longest, at 75 miles. The ride itself was visually spectacular, but almost on par with that was the level of support and organization that the staff and volunteers of San Luis Obispo Bicycle Club showed. Besides the fact that registration was incredibly smooth, they had people all along the route to help with navigation and cheer the riders on. The signage was excellent and the SAG support was reminiscent of a professional tour. No expense was spared for the rest stops, as well. Really an outstanding setting and experience. I hope to attend next year, as well.

I had a great time. It was my first Century ride. HWY 46 was a bit sketchy with the wind, however we got through it. The staff was great and the rest stops were well stock. I liked the watermelon, and little potato’s the best. I did expect energy bars but they were not available which was surprising. I did like the open event style of starting when you wanted. Over all it was a great event and will have interest in doing the ride again in the future.

Great event. The course was great although the wind was a bit nuts – it got pretty sketchy on the way out to Paso Robles for the 100mi option, lots of people turned around. Other than that, great event with great support. Ill likely be doing it again next year!

My First Century. I really enjoyed the ride. We ended up starting 30 min late. Was really disappointed that there was nothing at the start and the finish line. No signs and no cheering. Because we started 30 min late every rest stop we hit was starting to close. I felt bad for the multiple riders that were behind us, especially on the winery rest stop. When we left it was closing and so many riders still trying to tackle that hill that would need refueling there. Would be nice to have a medal or something at the end also to show off that I accomplished one of the harder centuries. I would have paid extra for the race to have this. The photographer was great. I have done many events like tough mudder etc and I’ve never purchased a photo. I am going to this time. The location and quality of the shot is great.

Hi, I did the 65 mile portion of this ride.
    Parking:
The parking was crowded and could have used an overflow lot to help ease this.
    Check-in:
The staff upon check-in were very friendly. The check-in was easy to find. The swag could have been better. It was a rubber bracelet and a riding patch.
    Ride:
The ride was windy but the view was great of the ocean. There was not a lot of climbing (only 1800 feet). I feel like the ride was a bit dangerous at some parts being on narrow shoulders of the highway. I feel like they could have provided notice of when the photographer was going to take a photo – I was caught off-guard.
    Rest stops / BBQ lunch:
The rest stops and BBQ lunch were well stocked with snacks, water, coffee, fruit. I felt like everything I needed was there including sun screen. The one thing that would be nice to have is energy packets.

There was signage about 250 feet before the photo station informing riders that the photographer was up ahead. We also operated a megaphone to announce our presence. Some riders chose to listen to music instead of listening to the sounds around them. That can be unsafe – not suggesting you did that but we observe many riders with ear buds in their ears. It’s important to be aware of what is around you especially while traveling on Hwy 1 where cars can go fast and visual and audible clues will keep you safe.

The SAG stops and SAG support were great….I was disappointed in the ride departure and arrival….no signage or hints about BBQ…even staff asked me where the finish was….ride was beautiful, of course! Not that I want a patch, but was surprised to get a 2016 patch for the 2017 ride.

This is my fourth Lighthouse and it is still one of the best rides out there. The staff is well organized and friendly. This year’s check in was improved by dropping the registration numbering. Yes, there is plenty of traffic along PCH and Route 46 but the shoulders range from adequate to generous. Most of the climbing for the century is between mile 17 and 55. Sag support was right on the scene when I had a flat. They were very friendly and helpful. The rest stops are well spaced and well stocked, especially in Cambria. I really appreciated the gluten free options since I have Celiac Disease. The last 30 plus miles is down coast so there is a nice tail wind to carry you back to Morro Bay.

Good roads, wide bike lanes but 60+mph traffic in many sections. Scenery is incredible especially along the ocean.
