I had a great time on the Marin Century this year in 2019. This was about my 5th time completing the 100 mile Traditional Route. Real food at the aid stations to complement gels and bars. Good food at the finish (handmade Pizza) and ice cream. I wished I finished earlier in the day, as they were out of BBQ sauce for the ribs. Will definitely ride again next year.

I did the Mt. Tam Century option. Overall, this was a very enjoyable ride. At registration, the volunteers didn’t seem to have basic answers to general questions (I guess people can be like that before they’ve had their caffeine), but after that, they were helpful and friendly. Food selection the first couple stops didn’t offer my preferred variety, but there were baked goods to make up for that. The ride itself was great, though the winding section along Hwy 1 (near Muir Beach) was a bit scary: fog + fast cars + minimal shoulders is not a good combination. I’ll probably do this again next year, though I wish the route was a full 100 miles.

Great ride! I did the Metric Century (was still recovering from a recent IM) and loved it! With one small exception (one turn wasn’t marked well but we figured it out), the route was clear and the ride was very well attended. Scenery was great and at times spectacular. The rest stops were particularly awesome (LOTS of great food) and the finish line food was even better–including ice cream and beer! Would definitely do this one again, probably one of the longer routes next time.

Wonderful ride! I leisurely completed the 100km and felt great. One of the most beautiful places to ride. There were dangerous descents where people crashed, unfortunately, but the ride organizers did their due diligence in alerting and warning all the riders with announcements and map markings where the danger zones were going to be. Luckily we got there early around 5:30 and got parking at the school, but if we arrived a little later we would have had to park on the street or offsite. The food was excellent and plentiful for most of the event, but I was surprised how the end of ride meals started to run out before 5pm, and it was supposed to close at 6pm I think. Some vendors, which were really cool, also started to pack up and the various raffles were done before several riders arrived. My friends did the 100mi ride and they, and probably some stragglers especially from the longer routes like the double metric and Tam centuries, were barely able to get pizza, which was my favorite. The BBQ and burritos were still plentiful. Only water, electrolyte water, and maybe chocolate milk were left. Also we were disappointed that there was no beer (I heard someone said it was because it was hosted at a high school and there were underage volunteers). Bike parking at the finish was good, but felt a bit cramped at the busy peak. Staff were all extremely friendly and the rest stops were well stocked with food, drink, sunscreen, ibuprofen, and the awesome Mike’s Bikes mechanic! I wish there was coffee at the first stop though similar to the start, which had a great breakfast spread! Those are just my notable pieces of feedback, but overall I truly enjoyed the event and I hope to do it again next year!

This was my first Marin Century and I did the 100K on my single speed bike. The course was one of the toughest rides I’ve ever done, at 3900 ft over 62 miles, but it was a stunning day on the bike. The ride out to Tomales Bay is a highlight after three big climbs in the first half of the course. The staff and the safety crew were excellent. My main issue is the same as many rides, where there is little accommodation for people that are gluten-free. While there were some options, for the length of the ride food was pretty much fruit, nuts and sweets. The finish line food, however, was excellent.

This was my first time doing a bike ride that was this challenging. I did the Mt Tam century ride. The ride was well supported – we had 4 different rest stops with really good food. However, the second rest stop was 35 miles away from the first rest stop and included two climbs including the Mt Tam climb. So it was really brutal.
Overall, this was a great experience and I want to do it next year as well.

This was my first century ride and this event did not disappoint. The rest stops are really incredible, I was pleasantly surprised by the diversity of snacks available and the finish line BQQ was delicious. Most of the course has low traffic, relatively good road conditions and nice views.

I did the 100km Metric Century ride. The event as a whole was very well organized. The volunteers at the start/finish and the rest stops were very friendly and accommodating. Parking situation at the start/finish area wasn’t too difficult, just had to park at the nearby mall as recommended by the organizers. There was a good variety of food available at the rest stops, ranging from store-bought snacks to fresh local fruit to fresh local baked goods. Only snag as mentioned by other reviews was a poorly marked intersection at mile 42 of the Metric Century loop. There were at least 20 of us left puzzled as to where we needed to go, but fortunately, some of the course marshalls steered us in the right direction after 5 minutes or so. I would definitely do this event again and would recommend it to other cyclists.

It was my first Marin metric century ride. The route was beautiful and the weather was perfect. The rest stops were full of food and drinks. The staffs/volunteers were very friendly. There was some issue with marking on the road and a bunch of us ended up at the Point Reyes Station. After asking the locals, we turned back and got back on track. The after party was fun full with food and drinks. Definitely will do it again next year.

Beautiful ride. Well organized. Route was interesting in terms of challenge and scenery. Loved the rest stops and the variety of food. High points goes to rest stop #2, but all the rest stops were great and especially loved the music and exceptional local talent. We will do the ride again!

The Mt. Tam route of the Marin Century is a beautifully scenic and challenging ride. You have to dress accordingly riding in the cold, damp fog after the climb along the coast then an hour later finishing in 80 degree heat. The rest stops were well stocked with everything you need. Overall a fantastic ride and I’m looking forward to doing a third next year.

This is my third year doing the 100-mile option at the Marin Century. It’s a great ride! Fantastic rest stops with friendly staff and great food options (…with live music at the last two stops!), a great meal at the conclusion of the event (fruit, salad, pasta, bbq, wood-oven pizza, and some heavenly chocolate milk), beautiful scenery, some recently re-paved segments, and lanes shut down to cars during the really steep parts.

In 2019 they moved the start/finish from the Marin fairgrounds to Terra Linda High School; the venue itself was fine, but that significantly cut down on parking–we arrived around 6:30am and the high school lot was full, so we ended up parking about a half mile away on surface streets.

Overall, fantastic ride, and I look forward to doing it again next year!

I have done the metric century twice now, two years in a row. The event is organized VERY well. There was a slight issue with the markings on the road at mile 52-ish where EVERY cyclist went the wrong way and ended up in a small town in Marin. Bikes and cars bottlenecked and people were not happy. That was the only course issue. The SAG support was severely lacking this year though. I’ll be honest, I was hurting this ride as I think I was just dehydrated. One SAG car drove by, did not stop as I waved my hands. Going up a hill, I had to stop due to cramping. Two Marshalls rode by talking to each other. One asked “You good?”, I tried to get his attention, but he literally just kept riding and chatting with the other Marshall. Granted, I was going to just ask for some ideas on getting the cramping to subside (I’m am usually not a cramper), but if I had a severe issue, that would not have been good. But this, I feel, is NOT the norm of the event and would DEFINITELY recommend it. The 2019 route for the metric century was FAR more beautiful than 2018, but 2018 was pretty as well.

I had been looking forward to the Marin 200km for a while as a way to cap off a summer of serious cycling since picking up my road bike a few months ago; I had even come up to the North Bay to spend my July 4th weekend cycling around Mt Tam, Point Reyes and the Marin hills to acclimate to the area. Unfortunately, while the roads and views in Marin are fantastic, the actual ride that takes you on them as part of the Marin Century is a considerable letdown.

Let me be clear; it’s the first 40-50 miles of this ride are second to none, as you come out of Terra Linden High School along Lucas Valley Road and descend into Fairfax and start a gorgeous climb up to Alpine Dam and eventually Mt Tam, with view of a sea of fog or the Pacific Ocean beneath you as you climb up towards East Peak, before descending down into Muir Woods. It’s a ride second to none and the car traffic is minimal, since you’re starting early in the day and the police man stretches of road. However, this would be nothing new to anyone who’s been to the area before and as for folks riding Marin for the first time, this would be more than enough to cap off a memorable day of biking. As soon as you’re directed onto CA-1 headed north, that’s when the problems start to set in:

    a) Traffic. You will be fighting cars headed in the same direction as you for a solid 75% of the remainder of the ride. Everyone is going north on CA 1 to head to Stinson Beach/Point Reyes and you’ll be left uneasily pedaling in the almost non-existent shoulder for the majority of the way, with little opportunity to enjoy the foggy scenery around you. Things don’t get much better once you come out of Point Reyes and head towards Nicasio Reservoir, where there is a constant stream of cars whizzing past you. I’ve done 3 other rides this year (Primavera Century, Sequioa Century, Santa Cruz Mountains Challenge) and I haven’t seen nearly this many cars on your tail going past you at full speed, when all you’d want to do is enjoy the otherwise immaculate road surfaces in Marin. The shoulder in some places is quite good, but coming back down Nicasio/Lucas Valley Road again, you’ll be squeezed by the car traffic and left constantly calling out cars, sapping away the enjoyment at a time when you’d want to relax your aching muscles.

    b) Rest stops. For a ride this expensive (you’ll pay at least $100), you’d expect a wide variety of grub and hopefully something substantial for lunch. However, there are a miserly FIVE rest stops along the 200 km route (not counting a small water stop) and they have pretty slim picking, with mostly snack bars/fruit. There are some nice donuts/nutella sandwiches/cheese/croissants as well, but there was no lunch and most rest stops have the same selection. If you need to use the restroom in the early stages of the ride, long lines await you, as there are no more than 2-3 stalls per rest stop, serving what is supposed to be several thousand riders (!!). Worse still, the last 2 stations were almost empty when we reached and there was still a full hour before they would officially close up according to the route sheet. That is simply not acceptable for a ride of this magnitude, when you’re paying almost top dollar. Dinner after the ride was likewise a letdown, with most of the food cold and not very appealing and there was little to lift up your spirits after such a long day in the saddle.

    c) Misc thoughts. The scorching summer heat will the time you spend riding north of Nicasio pretty unpleasant, with very little rewards in terms of things to see. I’d imagine the classic century was even more unbearably hot, since you’ll spend the majority of your time in the actual Marin hills. Spring would have been so much better, especially since you’d see something other than shades of dead yellow/brown while riding.

SAG support is a notable positive; we saw many vehicles on the road, so if something were to go wrong, you’d have backup pretty quickly. We were fine, but we saw SAG vehicles serving a number of people along the route, including folks who had crashed (be careful coming down Mt Tam! The speed can be intoxicating). The volunteers do the best they can, but no amount of dedication from them can make up for what I’d consider to be pretty lazy management on behalf of the organizers.

It’s overall a shame that this ride was such a letdown, since I had otherwise enjoyed riding in Marin before. I love riding centuries as a way to explore an area, but I feel that the Marin century just has too many problems to make it worth my time and money. I know that traffic is something out of our control as cyclists, but since the problem is so well known, it would have been good if the route had been planned to account for that. Similarly, for a ride of this size, the organization of the rest stops was simply not up to scratch and should have been scaled up accordingly. Lastly, unless you’re keen on riding the Mt Tam part, please do yourself a favor and ride the Marin hills at another time in the year, when you won’t be left out to dry in the summer heat.

Overall, I wouldn’t recommend the Marin century to other riders; the scenery is great, but that comes from the location alone and has nothing to do with the lack of competent staffing/planning that goes into what you’d hope would be a well organized ride, especially after so many years.

2019 was my first time doing the Marin Century (I chose the 100 mi route). Would definitely do it again. Went alone, but felt safe, supported and welcome. The only thing I wish was done differently was the finish. By the time I arrived (within the event time window), the vendors, music and food was already being broken down and everyone was getting ready to leave. Haven’t gotten the “perks” 🙁 The organizer should keep in mind that longer rides, such as 100 mile, or double century, on a hot August day could stretch to 10 hours and coordinate the event to allow the tired finishers to actually celebrate and not feel like “arrived too late”. Other than that, I would recommend this ride to everyone looking to do a scenic, long ride in California.

I did the Mt Tam Century 100 mile. The Course was challenging, super fun, and I didn’t get lost. The festival area was great. Food was very good! Parking was very easy, real close to the start/finish.

Scenic, challenging, but fun century course. I wouldn’t recommend for first time century riders. Well spaced rest stops with fresh fruit, many carbohydrate food choices, and an assortment of sports and regular drinks. Enjoyed the after ride meal starting with chocolate milk, pulled pork sandwich, and burrito. Finished with a gelato. This is my fourth time riding and plan to return. I’m from Los Angeles.

This was my first time riding the Marin Century. I have ridden many other organized rides. My friend and I rode the Mt. Tam option, which gave us beautiful ocean views and nice climbing in the Redwoods. Weather was perfect and I enjoyed every mile of this ride. Food and drink options at the finish were outstanding. I decided to ride it the day before the event and was not disappointed.

I did the Marin Metric Century. It was my first century and I think it’ll be hard to beat. The weather was perfect, the route was stunning with the perfect amount of hills to be challenging and fun. The scenery changed a lot – everything was picturesque. The rest stops had huge variety of food and beverages. From sandwiches and cookies to fresh strawberries and even cherries – my favorite! I loved how they had lane control ( I think that’s what they call if when they close off a lane just for the riders of the century) climbing up to big rock. The climb was challenging, but not too challenging! There were some awesome decents on the route too. The cars in this are are so curious to bikers – this makes a huge difference!

I enjoyed doing the Marin Century again! So far I did 100k, Classic Century and Mt Tam Century. Events staff were very friendly and food variety at rest stops were fantastic. I like the route variations as well. Depending on my physical readiness, I can choose easy to challenging routes. Whichever I choose there are always beautiful scenery.

Beautiful course and scenery, challenging but not insane. Two of the climbs had lane closures to automobile traffic, which was fantastic. Food selection at the rest stops and finish was generally good. Not too hot out on the roads, either. Not much schwag to speak of from the ride organizers themselves, though the post-ride expo had some stuff. Overall, a great ride!

I had a great time doing the marin century! This is my 3rd time doing this event and I am definitely doing it again next year. This year (and last year) I did the 100mi event. There was a lot of fresh food at rest stops and the volunteers who were helping with providing them were very friendly. There were several porta potties at the rest stops which limited the size of lines and helped me be efficient at the rest stop. The directions were easy to follow and there were plenty of signs. I passed by several course marshals who did a great job. When my friend got a flat tire early in the ride, they helped us by providing a co2 cannister so we didn’t have to hand-pump.The course was safe. The food at the finish ran out by the time i got to the end, but I did get some ice-cream. In previous years, they did not run out as early. But I do like the food spread at the finish a lot.

Great event, my first time riding at the Marin Century. Event staff were very professional and friendly. Post-ride lunch options were delicious. The route was spectacular and I look forward to next year’s event.

I did the 100k last year and the 100 mile this year. The rest stops are great — Super friendly volunteers and tons of food and drink. Everyone has a great supportive attitude. The roads towards the end of the day are a bit dicey, which is not ideal when you are exhausted, but the traffic controls throughout the morning are excellent and greatly appreciated.

I really enjoyed the availability of many different types of fruit at all the rest stops, because I believe fruit is the best thing to eat during a ride.
I registered at the last minute the morning of the ride and it was fast and painless.
The presence of CHP was much appreciated.
I would do this ride again.

Marin Cyclists is a nonprofit club dedicated to helping cyclists meet up to experience the wonders of riding in Marin County and the wider Bay Area. We offer organized rides on weekends and shorter, informal rides during the week as well as a speaker series and social gatherings. Our signature event is the annual Marin Century (six rides ranging from 30 to 200 miles), which offers 3,000 cyclists an epic day in the saddle, a highly rated after party, and the opportunity to support some deserving local organizations. Our members have a range of abilities and ambitions and are invited to share their expertise and enthusiasm for cycling by leading club rides and volunteering at club events.
